Council to ask the Region for reduced rates all the time, for people with mobility issues
Welland city council recently voted to ask the Region it consider discounted transit rates for WellTrans, all the time, for people with mobility problems.
Councillor David McLeod pointed out it's not right riders pay full fair when taking transit to Seaway Mall, to get the discounted tickets.
He added it shouldn't be about revenue for the region. "Would you rather pay a dollar more a year for the transit levy, and be able to afford the discount more readily to this particular group.... I believe there would be a resounding 'yes'".
He says the regular rate financially penalizes riders who have to travel to get the discount.
Councillor Leo Van Vliet added the discount tickets takes away the need for cash.
"When we had transit, we had cash boxes right on the buses. That was one of the things that was done away with, because it's just too dangerous to have money on those buses."
