Council has voted for a two year term
St. Catharines deputy mayor will be appointed to a two year term.
During city council's meeting Tuesday night, discussion revolved around 6-months, as well as one month, which Councillor Kevin Townsend did not look too keenly on.
"I do believe for the deputy mayor, there is a learning curve with it. You need someone in that position for longer than six months. The one month simply didn't work, I think with one meeting you don't even know what's happening," he says.
However, Councillor Mark Stevens made his case for the 6-month term. "I just thought the two year term only allows 2 of us to become a deputy mayor. I would suggest that it be every 6 months, and that would give up to eight councillors a chance to do it, if they ever wanted to do it, and that brings a fresh face."
After some debate, council voted for the two year term, going against city staff's recommended four year term.
