Wayne Gates says this should be for anyone caring for a loved one at home, giving relief to long-term care system
A 2nd attempt by Niagara Falls NDP MPP to ensure people giving care to loved ones who need it at home are paid.
Wayne Gates is introducing his provincial bill on Wednesday, saying too many people are leaving their jobs to give care almost full time.
He adds this would give relief to long-term care homes. "We have 40,000 people on a wait list for long-term care wait lists. If we could get this done, 7.8% of long-term care beds would benefit from this, and it would replace those long-term care beds."
He questions the priorities of some Conservatives who told him this is too expensive.
"That it's more important to spend $2.2-billion on Ontario Place, with a spa that nobody needs with a 95-year lease... Nobody, I think, will agree that we need to put a tunnel under the 401."
He adds for every dollar paid into this program, it'll save $2.61 in long-term care costs.
It'll also be a payment, not a tax credit.
