Welland Fire and Emergency Services is reminding people that No Ice is Safe Ice.
Residents are especially urged to be cautious around the Welland Canal.
Thirty-five percent of all drownings in Canada take place in the winter months.
People who fish, snowmobile, cross country ski or participate in any other activities on frozen lakes, ponds or canals are encouraged to know the risks.
Welland Fire and Emergency Services say that water in Ontario is colder than most people realize.
A person who falls into cold water can go into shock within one minute and only survive for a few minutes.
Motorized activities on frozen bodies of water are especially risky , as repeated passes can cause the ice to fracture.
Some ice safety tips include checking the thickness of the ice, and staying near the shore.
Residents can also check the colour of the ice.
Clear blue ice is considered the strongest, whereas white or opaque ice is much weaker.
