Explosions heard across the country
Russian planes are targeting cities and bases in Ukraine and tanks and troops are rolling across the border in what Ukraine's government is calling a full-scale war.
President Vladimir Putin chillingly referred to his country's nuclear arsenal and threatened any foreign country attempting to interfere with the invasion with -- quote -- ``consequences you have never seen.''
The Russian military claims to have wiped out Ukraine's entire air defences in a matter of hours, and European authorities declared the country's air space an active conflict zone.
The Russian Defence Ministry says it is not targeting cities, but using precision weapons.
The ministry also claims there is no threat to civilian population.
But Ukraine officials are reporting at least 40 civilian and military casualties so far.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will meet today with fellow G-7 partners to discuss the invasion and come up with a collective response.
Meantime, Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg says NATO will defend and protect every ally against any attack on every inch of NATO territory.
Stoltenberg is calling Russia's invasion of Ukraine a brutal act of war.
NATO ambassadors held an emergency meeting earlier today and say they have increased the readiness of their forces to respond to all contingencies.
