Traffic Decision Coming for Intersection

Niagara Region to decide on traffic lights or roundabout at airport

The Niagara Region has yet to decide if it'll install a traffic roundabout or lights at the Airport Road and Niagara Stone Road intersection.

Director of Transportation Frank Tassone was recently updating Niagara on the Lake's committee of the whole of its Transportation Master Plan.

He says they carefully consider what type of controls are at intersections.  "We have put a pause on making any decision at that particular intersection, until we see exactly what the plans are for the airport.  Then we'll be moving forward in collaboration with airport staff, with town staff, and making a decision that will best suit the area as a whole."

Councillor Gary Burroughs says the area is challenged now, and needs solutions to traffic.

He adds traffic lights would not be good, as traffic is bad enough now with stop and go, without lights.

Tassone told councillors safety audits will be done.  "In that we would execute a robust, road user, training program, focused on the proper use of roundabouts, with specific emphasis on education for school aged children, in collaboration with St. David's public school."
