It would address conduct of municipal politicians, something the province voted against
Thorold city council has voted to push the Ontario government to strengthen municipal Codes of Conduct for politicians.
The province recently voted against Bill 5, which, in part, would enable the removal of a politician, as well as strengthen penalties imposed.
Councillor Tim O'Hare recalled what he saw at the last Association of Municipalities of Ontario conference. "When a female councillor, who had been abused and harrassed in the workplace as a councillor, stood up and asked why this Bill was defeated, not a single minister stood up and answered her."
Councillor Jim Handley, who voted against what his colleagues supported, suggested Bill 5 was defeated over Constitutional issues.
"They didn't want it going to the Supreme Court of Canada because it may have infringed, what the wording was, in regards to peoples' rights," he says.
Councillor Ken Sentence pointed out he couldn't imagine sending his daughter to work, where there wouldn't be ramifications.
