Thorold councillor revealed shocking domestic violence stats nationwide, adding it's getting worse
The numbers are disturbing when it comes to intimate partner violence cases in Niagara.
Thorold city council has joined a growing list of regional municipalities in declaring it an epidemic.
Councillor Tim O'Hare with the shocking facts... every six days a woman in Canada is killed by someone close to her. "In Niagara region, in 2022, there were 5,160 intimate partner violence calls... those are astounding figures."
Thorold council and the Niagara Region's #1 request is for the Ontario government to declare this an epidemic.
In doing so, the councillor points out such declaration can provide more funding to the agencies providing help.
He added the crisis is getting worse. "We heard that when the city clerk, Matthew Trennum and I, were involved in the "Walk a Mile in Her Shoes".... it's on an increase, not only in Niagara... and this is troubling."
The declaration comes from the Renfrew Inquest, started after the murders of three women in Ottawa in 2015.
