Ryerson University changing name to Toronto Metropolitan University.
Ryerson University is changing its name.
The new name, Toronto Metropolitan University, will take effect right away.
The name was approved by the school's board of governors earlier today.
"Our new name Toronto Metropolitan University embodies so many things about our university, our community, our students, faculty, staff and alumni", says President and Vice-Chancellor Mohammed Lachemi. "Located in the heart of our country’s biggest and most diverse city - we represent all that it is to be metropolitan."
This comes after a months-long examination of the school's namesake and his role in the residential school system in Canada.
During protests last summer, the campus' Egerton Ryerson statue was toppled.
