Niagara Centre MP Fred Davies spoke before Conservative legislation was defeated
Conservative legislation to keep repeat violent offenders in jail, and not given bail, was defeated yesterday in the House of Commons.
Just before the vote on Bill C-242, Niagara South MP Fred Davies said several survivors of sexual abuse told him their stories in his office.
He added police tell him horror stories of how useless catch and release is. "One officer recently told me how he had arrested the same individual 30 times over a several month time period, in Niagara. In some situations the same individuals were released on the same day, on a simple promise to appear."
He called promise to appear both laughable and sad.
He also told the legislature Daniel Senecal, accused of rape and assaulting a 3-year old Welland girl, is appearing for bail soon when he should be in jail.
He added during the election people told him their concerns of rising crime. "The stats are clear, but the fear is palpable and real. The current Liberal approach of forcing judges to release offenders at the earliest possible opportunity, under the least onerous conditions, is an abomination."
The Liberal government has said it has its own justice reform is coming, and expressed concern the Conservatives will think it's too tough.
