Region acquires 2 VIA rail stations from CN, it'll renovate in St. Catharines and Niagara Falls
Expect to see a sharp rise in GO Train service out of Niagara by the end of 2024.
Matt Robinson is the Director of Niagara's GO Implementation office, and tells us it's due to the region recently acquiring two VIA rail stations from CN. The region is spending $40-million to fix them, one being in Niagara Falls.
"And then in St. Catharines, we're going to see a construction start on the station site, with a new bus loop, with a transformed parking and pickup and drop off area, and a new primary station access road," he says.
He adds Metrolynx, which runs GO, has ordered 11 trains.
There'll be additional stops in Lincoln and Grimsby. "So the public is excited for the prospect of 11 trains a day coming into Niagara. And what we're doing on our end, in partnership with Metrolinx who delivers the service, is looking to play a hands on roll in improving the infrastructure required."
The region set aside the money in 2016.
