Pilot program to give electricity discounts to hydrogen producers considered
Provincial government is taking steps to help hydrogen producers, while reducing need for other energy forms including fossil fuels.
Niagara West MPP and Associate Minister of Energy-Intensive Industries Sam Oosterhoff says they're looking at a pilot program that'll reduce electricity rates for hydrogen producers, if they reduce their use of electricity during peak periods. "But that's not all... given the increased need for rapid and reliable transportation options for hydrogen, I'm also announcing that our government will ask the OEB to explore the possibility of expanding the Ontario Energy Board's mandate to regulate and include dedicated hydrogen pipelines."
Natural Resources Canada estimates increased hydrogen use could eliminate 69 megatonnes of emissions yearly.
He repeated energy demand in Ontario is expected to rise 70% in the next 25-years. "In sectors like steel, and manufacturing, for example, hydrogen can significantly reduce our emissions without compromising quality or productivity. And, we know that the hydrogen sector is forecast to be a major source of economic development."
The government aims to reduce energy reliance on sources from outside the province.
