Doug Ford announces the province will not touch the Greenbelt for housing
Premier Doug Ford is reversing course on using the Greenbelt to get more homes built in Ontario.
He made the announcement this afternoon in Niagara Falls.
"It was the wrong decision, and we're putting this land back in the Greenbelt," Ford said. "We're going to continue to be focused 100 percent on every avenue to build homes for the people of this province."
He added the process in deciding which land would be removed left a lot of room for certain developers to be favoured.
Despite the change of heart, Ford notes developing on the Greenbelt would have added tens of thousands of homes in the province.
His comments come one day after a second cabinet minister stepped down over the controversy.
Ford was joined by members of his cabinet, who are in town for a party retreat.
