The town is preferring speed humps, and police, although cameras show drivers slow down
The Town of Pelham has voted not to partner with the Niagara region on implementing speed cameras.
Instead, the town will continue with speed humps, flashing beacons, and police.
Some councillors noting an officer can give discretion when someone is a km or 2 over the limit, and can offer warnings.
However, Deputy Mayor Brian Eckhardt noted the camera on Highway 20 is slowing drivers down, even overnight. "It does act as a deterrent, just having it there. That's why municipalities would get old OPP cruisers, or construction sites would get the same, and park them in a construction zone, empty, but people would see that cruiser and slow down, because they didn't know if it was an active OPP cruiser or not."
Council added it's just a matter of time before that camera is moved, which the Niagara Region has control over.
Councillor Kevin Ker says a warning from police can work just as well. "And I've had this happen in Fonthill, on Highway 20, up near the log cabin, in which I slow right down to the speed limit and I've had a pick up truck ride my back bumper. And I've seen people pull out and pass in those areas."
A staff report shows many drivers speed on other roads to avoid that camera.
