The force expecting the budget to go up almost 15% for 2027
Another challenging budget year in 2027 for Niagara Regional police, as it looks at an almost 15% increase.
The police services board was told it's mainly due to wage increases, but also other rising expenses on hiring, equipment and programs not implemented yet.
Board Vice Chair Pat Chiocchio said they've got to get that 14.8% down. "I know the Region and municipalities are trying to bring the taxes as low as possible for the people who are struggling. I think we have to do our part, like you said, line by line, and sometimes we have to think outside the box."
He added the provincial government owes the NRP millions, while it's already paid OPP money.
Chief Bill Fordy also commented on money paid to the OPP. "There were monies provided to them, and I think that's because that (OPP), is their service. For municipal departments like ours it largely fell to the (municipal) levy."
Chiocchio hopes this year they can get that tax number down.
