No Tolerance for Drug Use: NRP

Police say they're taking a different approach, after community concerns of open-air drug use

Niagara Regional police say they have listened to a concerned public, and are trying a new approach to stop the use of illegal drugs outside in public places.

They're starting a no-tolerance approach, although they know there's a wide range of views on this approach.

If there is open-air drug use, individuals will be asked to stop, the drugs taken, and moved on.

The NRP say those asked to stop will be directed to community resources and crisis supports, while arrest will happen only when necessary.

The force adds addiction is an illness, and the intent is not to criminalize those struggling.

Niagara Falls Mayor Jim Diodati says what we've been doing isn't working, it's time for a new approach.
