The union says it's mainly for fair wages
There could be a strike this summer of Niagara Parks workers, potentially impacting hotels, restaurants, maintanance workers and trades people.
Local 217 union president Mike Goforth says it's mainly about fair wages, to keep up with inflation. "We know the park can afford it, we know how much money they have, we see it everyday. That's the jist of it, they're not budging on the percentage for the increase on the wages, so that's the biggest issue."
He adds the provincial government is getting involved, which it shouldn't be, as the union is not taxpayer funded, but 100% self funded. "Their worry, for whatever reason is about other units that are taxpayer dollars, and they're worried about what we might get. Well, it's none of their business, we are our own local, we are 100% self funded, so stay out of it."
Niagara Parks will not be commenting on this, except to say it is committed to fair bargaining process.
