Over 14,000 third doses administered in Ontario.
The National Advisory Committee on Immunizations (NACI) is recommending immunocompromised people get a third COVID-19 shot, despite calls from the World Health Organization to end the practice.
The global agency is urging vaccine-rich countries to stop administering third doses until the end of the year, so the shots can instead go to countries that are under-vaccinated.
Alexandra Hilkene, spokesperson for Health Minister Christine Elliott, notes that as of Tuesday night, over 14,500 third doses have been given to Ontarians.
Hilkene notes the province isn't planning to stop the practice, saying a third dose is much more effective than two shots in immunocompromised patients, including transplant recipients and people being treated for blood cancers.
Earlier today, the NACI issued the recommendation, saying people who are immunocompromised tend to have a weaker response to vaccinations.
