Joe Kushner has served the community coming up on 50-years, a park being named after him
The longest serving St. Catharines city councillor, and, in fact, in Canada, has been honoured.
The city revealed the new Joe Kushner Park over the weekend, renaming it from Woodgale Park, to honour a man who will have served 50-years at the end of this term.
Mayor Mat Siscoe is thrilled council voted to approve this, adding the councillor's contributions to Brock University, philanthropist and Greater Niagara Humane Society, among other groups, led to the change.
Councillor Kushner, first elected in 1976, has won every election and served under seven mayors, and city research shows the longest nationwide.
The councillor adds he's always fiscally prudent, never wanted to run for mayor, provincially or federally, and never accepted donations, to be held by certain interests.
He adds he's been elected seven times mainly by spending taxpayers money as if it's his.
He also recalls his Ukranian father's advise, in broken English... "Jove, always serve the pooblic, that means taxpayers pay your salary, don't disappoint".
Councillor Kushner says this was quite a shock, and took him by surprise.
