OPP warning of growing number of cyber enabled crimes
During the month, the OPP, RCMP, the Canadian Anti Fraud Centre and the Competition Bureau of Canada are joining police services across the country to promote public awareness to help prevent us from becoming victims of fraud.
This year, the campaign will highlight five important topics; buying and selling online, online financial scams, securing your account and identity, email and online scams.
OPP note, the pandemic has changed how Canadians shop, conduct business, learn and interact with each other but it has also spawned a growing number of cyber enabled crimes.
Last year, the Anti Fraud Centre received nearly 20,000 fraud reports from close to 10,000 victims in Ontario.
And officials note only about five percent of victims actually report a crime.
