St. Catharines pushing for stop lights, signs, bollards at Haig and Carlton
Good chance you'll see some traffic bollards, stop lights or stop signs on Carlton and Lake Streets in St. Catharines.
Councillor Caleb Ratzlaff's motion was passed by city council Tuesday, asking the Region to consider this after a crossing guard was hit by a pickup truck at Haig and Carlton on the first day of school.
The councillor says there's a lot of kids in that area, especially with changing demographics. "Harriet Tubman, large school, when it rains there are cars all over the place, on those residential streets... and the principal is always encouraging parents to walk their kids."
Councillor Robin McPherson backed Ratzlaff on the motion, and spoke of the intersection where the guard was hit. The motion calls for traffic lights or 4-way stop to be put in at that spot.
"I actually called my mom, because she's obviously older than I am, and she remembers that intersection much better than I do, because she lived downtown, and she said it has been an issue for kids crossing for decades," she says.
Niagara Regional police tell us there haven't been any charges laid into what happened at Haig and Carlton, and they're waiting for word on the latest condition of the crossing guard.
