St. Catharines fire department to receive almost $50,000
Some provincial money to help St. Catharines fire department with cancer prevention initiatives and enhance firefighter safety.
It's close to $50,000, through the first year of Ontario's new Fire Protection Grant, which is a 3-year, $30-million program announced in the 2024 budget for firefighter health and safety.
The fire department says firefighters face exposure to hazardous chemicals and die of cancer at a rate of four times the general population.
The money will help St. Catharines fire department buy specialized washing and drying equipment to decontaminate gear that firefighters wear into fires.
The fire department has also partnered with Niagara Regional police and Niagara Parks police to buy new equipment for the Next Generation 911 call system.
