$8,000 fine issued after company and directors plead guilty to fire code violations.
St. Catharines Fire Services is reminding tenants, homeowners and landlords to ensure their properties have working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms.
On September 10th, 1812290 Ontario Ltd., and three of its directors pleaded guilty to six fire code violations relating to a residence on Queenston Street.
Four of the counts were for not having working smoke alarms, and the other two related to not having properly maintained carbon monoxide alarms.
As a result, a fine of $8,000 plus court charges was issued.
St. Catharines Fire Services says working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms are not only required by law, but can save lives during emergencies.
Homes must have smoke alarms on every storey and outside all sleeping areas.
The law also requires carbon monoxide alarms outside sleeping areas in units with a fuel-burning appliance, as well as units that share a floor or wall with an attached garage of a service room that has a fuel-burning appliance.
