Niagara Centre MPP says strong mayor system only serves to benefit the PC party
A local MPP is once again speaking out against the Ford government's strong mayor system.
Jeff Burch, who is the NDP's critic for municipal affairs, says the strong mayor system has nothing to do with housing, and only serves to give the government more power.
"This premier is now forcing his unwanted and undemocratic scheme onto regional councils. So, he can wield more power, giving himself the authority to handpick regional chairs whenever he chooses, and institute minority rule."
Last week, the province introduced a bill that would give it the power to appoint regional chairs in several areas, including Niagara.
Housing Minister Steve Clark responded by saying there will be increased housing opportunities in the affected communities.
