Councillor David McLeod's motion sought the resignation of Tony DiMarco, over behavioral issues
A Welland city councillor will not be asked by his council colleagues to resign over his behaviour during council meetings.
Tony DiMarco has been ejected more than once, including for swearing at the mayor.
Councillor David McLeod brought forth the motion, in which council would decide if it wants to ask DiMarco for his resignation... council cannot force it.
In voting against the idea Tuesday night, Councillor John Chiocchio pointed out over 900 people voted for DiMarco. "Not only did they do it last year, but they've done it 4 times. He was elected by the people of Ward 4, and they re-elected him last year, and they knew what his behaviour was like, because it didn't start this year."
Mayor Frank Campion voting against the resignation idea, feeling it just makes a statement, and not action.
Councillor McLeod said DiMarco's behaviour has gone on far enough. "I believe even the Integrity Commissioner seemed at a loss as to how to have a positive impact on Councillor DiMarco's behaviour. We, as a council, have a responsibility to protect the integrity of the city's decision making body."
Chiocchio pointed out it's up to voters to decide, and not council.
