The Liberal government has tabled new measures allowing municipalities to ban handguns.
The legislation indicates the federal government's support for municipalities that ban handguns through by-laws restricting storage and transportation.
People who violate municipal rules will potentially face jail time.
The bill also proposes a buyback of several recently banned firearms, allowing owners to turn in their guns for compensation.
Owners would have the option of keeping the guns, so long as they abide by strict conditions.
The legislation also introduces "red flag" and "yellow flag" laws that would allow people to apply to the courts for immediate removal of a person's guns.
Last May, the Canadian government banned over 1500 models and variants of assault-style firearms.
