Councillor Bob Gale getting support for motion to keep levy increase at 3.5%, it was 9.6% for 2025
A move at Niagara regional council to keep tax increases under control.
Councillor Bob Gale has introduced a motion, supported by Councillor Rob Foster, as well as Councillor Wayne Redekop, to keep the levy increase maintained at 3.5%.
He adds agencies, boards and commissions, such as police or housing, are to be advised of this. "Whereas the consolidated general levy, inclusive of ABC's, capital financing, and program changes in 2025, and previous years, has placed a heavy, unaffordable, and unsustainable tax burden on property taxes for residences and businesses."
He noted the increase for 2025 was at 9.6%.
"So, whereas according to the Municipal Act, one of the responsibilities of the regional council is to maintain the financial integrity of the municipality, and whereas we are confronted with unprecedented economic and financial challenges."
This is set to be discussed at a future council meeting.
