Region and NRP Sorting Tow Truck List

The region says the province relieved municipalities of responsibility, the list was made to help combat truck turf wars in Toronto

The Niagara region and NRP are tossing a list of tow truck companies sent to collisions back and forth, wondering who's in charge of it.

At a March regional meeting, officials pointed out the province has relieved municipalities of the list, while a police report indicates the list is not an effective use of police resources.

Police services board member Bill Steele was pretty clear.  "I don't want to see this coming back to our budget.   We've got other things that we need to deal with, that are services we must provide. This is not a service we must provide anymore, so, I don't want to come back at all, I think this should go back to the region, and it should deal with it."

He says he's ok with police towing from crime scenes, but not general collisions.

Member Kevin Gibson is a former RCMP officer.  "In my experience, the police have often done it.  And, I don't know of any dollars that would be involved.  It's simply a list of tow companies that express their interest in being on the list of companies that tow for the police."

Chief Bill Fordy says they are gathering more information for a decision fair to all.
