Ovechkin Surpasses Gretzky for NHL Goals

The Great 8 scored his 895th career goal yesterday.

NEW YORK - Alex Ovechkin has made NHL history.

The 39-year-old Russian captain for the Washington Capitals surpassed Wayne Gretzky's all-time record for goals yesterday, recording his 895th career goal. It was a power-play goal in the second period of yesterday's 4-1 loss to the Islanders in New York.

This is the 20th NHL season for Ovechkin and he has played in 1,486 games since then. He has recorded 1,619 career points, 724 assists and he also holds the NHL record for career power-play goals with 325.

Ovechkin, also known as The Great 8 and Ovi, was drafted #1 overall in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft.
