Police say it has to do with machines used for credit card, debit sales in stores
An alert to Niagara area businesses from police about increased fraud from point-of-sale terminals.
They say criminals are targeting these machines more, by stealing or switching them, or installing malicious hardware to initiate fraudulent refunds to credit cards under their control.
Police say this type of fraud is costing businesses thousands of dollars in chargebacks and fees, but also potential damage to reputation.
Police are reminding businesses to keep terminals locked down, do daily physical inspections, train staff to be aware of tampering, and upgrade computer systems.
