Councillor Lococo says she gets calls from people, Councillor Patel disagrees, city is not filthy
Niagara Falls city council has voted for city staff to look at more creative ways to curb littering.
Councillor Lori Lococo brought forth a motion, saying she gets calls and emails from people.
Councillor Tony Baldinelli agreed, saying while he understands the city is short staffed to cleanup, this is a tourist city. "Every time I go to different cities, whether it's Guelph or Kitchener, or any place in Europe, you go to a tourist site, and it's beautiful. You come here, and for the last 3 or 4 years, garbage here and there, and no one seems to care."
Mayor Jim Diodati said it's unbelievable that some people just throw garbage around, but added some have been charged.
Councillor Mona Patel disagreed with the motion, saying she walks through the tourist area often, and it's never dirty.
"In my neighbourhood, I don't see garbage. It does happen now and then, but I won't say that our city is filthy, that's downgrading our city. Our city is not filthy, and I personally have not received any calls about littering."
City staff noted there are already programs that encourage public assistance in cleanups.
